My love for our national parks started at a young age. Growing up, my father and I spent many weekends together in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As a child, he was not fortunate enough to have the same easy access to nature, so it was especially important for him to share it with me. The time we spent together in that national park, in those beautiful forests, became a formative part of my childhood. We both started to appreciate the clarity that comes with isolating yourself in nature.
Years later, I realize this early exposure to nature played a huge part in my decision to spend a year traveling to every national park in my converted sprinter van that I happily named after my favorite CCR song, Suzie Q. Despite my early inclination toward the outdoors and my enthusiasm to fully commit to “van life”, nothing could have prepared me for its realities. It became normal for me to wake up in my tent to a Yosemite sunrise, put on a suit, and then catch a red-eye flight back to the East Coast. I felt like, or at least pretended to be, a double agent. I spent every waking moment possible in the outdoors, while also maintaining a traditional job to enable this lifestyle.
Traveling has always been second nature to me. I have been fortunate enough to travel to some of the most beautiful places around the world, but this van adventure made me quickly realize that everything I was searching for was right here—in our own backyard. However, as I spent more time immersed in the beauty of our national parks, I kept coming across the same challenge. I found myself struggling to share this happiness that I was discovering with my friends and family back home. Happiness is best when shared and photography is the best way I’ve found to share it.
